        Recently it was my privilege to share with a group of Believers on the subject of "RIGHTEOUS PERSONAL FINANCE". 
        An obvious topic was the need to exercise disciplined money management (usually referred to as a BUDGET). Maybe you can identify with UNC:JIM's SETASIDE bookkeeping system. 

--- OLDEN DAYS ---

    In the "olden days", many of us took the money (green stuff and coins) that we received at payday and physically divided it up into jars, envelopes, boxes .. which I will call SETASIDES. 
    We had a SETASIDE for each category of  'HOW ARE WE GOING TO SPEND OUR MONEY' ... examples might include: 

  • Tithes/offering,

  • Food and Supplies,

  • Lodging - rent or mortgage/taxes,

  • Transportation,

  • Rainy day or Emergency need,
    Kids schooling, and 

  • Everything Else

    After dividing up our periodic income into these SETASIDES, we took the money from the appropriate SETASIDE and paid our applicable bills ...... if there was any money left in a SETASIDE, then we were within our Budget. We established certain 'rules' for borrowing between SETASIDES to insure a pay back --- or how to handle an agreed grant from the one SETASIDE to another. 

- - - NOW-A-DAYS - - - - 

    This concept continues to be a tool for many of us even to this day. However, for a variety of many worthwhile reasons, our money flows through our Banks and Credit Card accounts, which complicates the "Olden Days' "green stuff" way of doing things. 
    In order to follow these very fine SETASIDE concepts shown above, we need to maintain certain financial records; namely, 

  • Check stub history and Bank Account Balance

  • Savings Account history and Balance

  • Check stub equivalent for Credit Cards. 

    Plus, we need to have a bookkeeping record of the transactions and remaining balances within each SETASIDE ... this can be shown on a "columnar sheet" of paper that has headings somewhat like the following SETASIDE Account Sample:

     In order for the records to be accurate, we obviously need to be sure our records agree with the Banks and Credit Cards. Then, of course, the total of all the SETASIDE Balances must agree with the balances in the Checking or Savings Bank Accounts, less the recorded unpaid balance due on the Credit Cards.
    Yep .... sounds like a lot of effort!   But any worthwhile money management endeavor is going to require a commitment to the necessary record keeping .... or you are NOT going to be living within your boundaries

.- - - - UNC:JIM's "SETASIDE" System - - - - 

    Many of us these days have a Personal Finance Computer System at home. I recommend a software product known as QUICKEN,  but there are others 'out there'. By using such a tool, anyone of us can get the advantages of the SETASIDE system as set forth above, which might include:

  1.   The captured entry posts simultaneously to the Check Register, for example, and the assigned SETASIDE Account (or a disguised Quicken Liability Account).

  2.   Deposits and/or checks are not only posted to our appropriate SETASIDE Account, but also by our selected types (Quicken classes) of Receipts and/or Paid Outs (like Tax deductible items).

  3.   Current amounts remaining in each SETASIDE Account can be seen on one page, or screen, at a glance; along with: >>Bank balances  >>Cash on Hand balances plus >>recorded amounts due on Credit Cards.

  4.   Detailed information within each SETASIDE Account (see above "columnar sheet" equivalent) can either be viewed on the screen or printed out.

  5.   The SETASIDE system helps you with the challenge of managing Credit Card debt.  You enter each Credit Card charge as you do when you write a check (after-all, you really are spending money, you know) and you pay off the balance monthly without incurring any finance charges.

  6.   You make buying decisions from meaningful current SETASIDE Account balance information ---- rather than from available money in the Bank or unused Credit Card balances.

  7.   Other relevant proof and information reports can either be viewed on the screen or printed out.

Current situation.....

            We have taken the QUICKEN Computer software and developed, what we call the
QVE system. This system allows you to place your "Money" into virtual 'ENVELOPES' of your choosing; you then only spend the contents of each 'ENVELOPE'. When we say "Money", we mean Cash on Hand, Bank Balances or Plastic (Credit Card) resources.
        The first step is for a BLVR to obtain and install the QUICKEN software and then email us at  Jim@bcidot.org 
        After going through some RPFin preliminaries and getting acquainted, we then follow through, by Email and/or exchange of QUICKEN files, with such things as:

--> We help you define your 'ENVELOPES' and establish your very personal unique system.
--> If PLASTIC is one of your RPFin issues, we work through these matters. We determine how best to use PLASTIC as a RPFin resource.
--> It is no secret that the "proof of the pudding" is the BLVR living within contents of the virtual "ENVELOPES". The BLVR already knows about such RPFin words as: budget; disciple; buying control; living within your income, etc.  Our mission is to provide you with some tools, but obviously the end result is up to the BLVR.
-> We agree about such things as scope and frequency of financial record keeping plus tasks and meaningful reports provided via your RPF system.
-> We agree how long  we will be needed.  Look forward to connecting up with you for the next step.
